Senior Civil Engineer/Associate

This role requires the candidate to take control and build a sustainable team at our Leeds office hub, supported initially by the team at the head office we see this appointment as a key milestone in the growth of PWA. Initially the role will comprise of managing existing projects and client base with the support of our multi-disciplinary team. Within 12 months assist in the development of a team of 4-6 permanent employees based in the Leeds office within Civil, Structural and Geo Technical disciplines delivering the operation goals of PWA Group.

Role Requirements

  • Degree (in relevant subject)+7 years
  • A proven record of success in senior level general or commercial management, preferably in a related industry.
  • Senior level experience of management of people and resources.
  • A wide knowledge of the industry.
  • An understanding of financial management and wider management principles and techniques.
  • Presentational skills with an appreciation of the demands of conflicting interests and of meeting statutory requirements.
  • A very high level of commercial awareness.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.


  • To be commercially aware and able to assist a team of engineers and technicians and successfully deliver projects to time, budget and quality.
  • To provide wide ranging highways, drainage and associated infrastructure design to deliver multi-disciplinary developments.
  • Have detailed knowledge of drainage design including piped systems, SuDS based systems familiar with storage design and computer programmes such as InfoDrainage.
  • Have experience in the preparation of Contract Drawings and Specifications and the negotiation of Section 38, 278, 104 and 106 Agreements.
  • To be able to produce and have knowledge in the design of highways, access roads and infrastructure of projects including the design of road geometry, earthworks, pavements, drainage and underground services. Identify resource and outsource

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Report to Senior Management
  • Act as ‘Supervisor’ for projects across all organisations.
  • Identify resource and outsource projects where required
  • Expand client portfolio
  • Identifying business risk and making informed choices where appropriate or advising others as required
  • Providing teams with defined structures and clear direction, enabling individuals to have a strong sense of ownership and personal responsibility for the delivery of objectives and outcomes
  • Ability to communicate PWA to clients
  • Business development activities and ability to cross sell our services. Generating new revenue streams and introducing new clients to the business, building networks locally, regionally and nationally
  • Manage risk to minimise the risk of litigation
  • Lead PDRs
  • People management
  • QMS and PWA standards compliance – establish and enforce rigorous quality control and assurance processes to maintain the highest technical standards
  • Ensure all engineering designs meet safety environmental and sustainability requirements including BREEAM
  • Undertake interviews for new team members
  • Generate new ideas and initiatives – obtaining buy in from the workforce driving the improvements required
  • Undertake assigned management tasks and identify where other team members can contribute
  • Embed new behaviours and manage change
  • Seek feedback both internally and externally
  • Review feedback from team and act on any outcomes both positive and negative
  • Challenge senior management on strategic goals and implementing new ideas to drive change and success
  • Understand appointment and warranty documentation
  • Understand your and PWA’s duties under CDM

  • Meeting goals from our Strategic Plan. This should involve maximising potential from existing client portfolio proven by increased sales through client management and exploration of new revenue streams and customers.
  • Build a permanent team at our Leeds Hub utilising existing and new colleagues to develop a sustainable team of 4-6 people within the first 12 months.
  • As part of the SLT complete management tasks which feedback important information to the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Weekly report on invoiced projects/deliverables, including aspects such as:
    • What client communication is required
    • Change of plans which will affect financial deliverables
    • Future resource requirements
    • Identifying gaps within predicted monthly invoice forecasts
  • Delivering internal and external CPDs (Leeds office personnel to contribute) on a monthly basis
  • Organising and attending Networking Events on a minimum quarterly basis  
  • Driving Strategic Direction. Developing plans to meet the current and future demands of PWA Group.
